Hi,

I am basically unsure about choosing my university major. I did a lot of research on what actuaries do, and it looks pretty cool and everything. However, I am still unsure whether I want to go into this field because of job security and money factors. Maybe you could explain these to me:

How many exams does a university graduate need to get into actuarial science work in Canada? I hear that a lot of people get 4 exams, which kind of scares me as far as money goes (e.g. if you get paid by your exams and you start off at entry level with 4 exams, you wouldnt move up by that much after you complete them all).

How easy is it to find a job as an actuary? When I look at D.W. Simpson job listing, there are very few postings in canada. I don't really like what they're offering.

How much money do actuaries really make in Canada? Information about entry level and full membership in SOA/CAS would be nice.

Do I need connections to get into the field?

That would be all, thanks!

You can really start employment after your first exam. it's extremely difficult to enter the actuarial profession without having any exams completed.

There are a lot of positions available in Canada and you can find them out through jobs4actuary's website. they have many recruiters that focus on actuaries in canada. check out jobs4actuary.com's salary survey. you should get a good feel of what the actuaries are making in canada and in other parts of the world. just log into the account. i found it extremely help. connections are always useful, but you have to be good as well. i hope that this has helped. good luck buddy.
